Emotions "in-motion" are waves of feelings we all have and they are natural and healthy and often adaptive and protective, motivating us and teaching us about a situation. There are no "bad" emotions - all emotions are good - it is how we interpret the situation and the feelings going a lot. All life experiences are "good and bad" at the same time - the rain may deter you from the beach trip AT THE SAME TIME you may enjoy a rainbow afterwards. The exam is "painful and stressful" AT THE SAME time it gets you closer to a goal, diploma or graduation. Emotion regulation is a very important skill of how we process the emotions and not let the emotions rule us (i.e. I get very angry over price confusion at the store yet I chose to recognize my anger and recognize that the cashier has nothing to do with the confusion of the price and chose not to express my anger at the cashier who has nothing to do with the computer glitch and choose to use my anger to write feedback to the company about my frustration with price confusion). EMOTIONAL DYSREGULATION is when we don't know how to "regulate" (like you regulate the heat/air conditioner knob for your room) our emotions and easily get knocked off our feet/act out on our emotion (i.e. I feel angry over the price confusion and I yell at the innocent cashier or cry or yell at my partner/friend). Some people have brains (genetics) that are more reactive (stronger emotions, more easily frustrated), life experiences (abusive childhood, abusive life experiences, being bullied or harassed, brain injury, etc) and lack of emotional regulation skills that make them more EMOTIONALLY DYSREGULATED. It is important for all of us to learn emotional regulation skills and to teach our children these skills for a healthy and successful life.
